Set a GOAL.
Four simple questions that carry you from reading the Bible to living it. You do not need to be an expert. You just need to read, notice, and respond honestly.
Quick does not mean shallow.
GOAL asks four plain questions. But plain questions can do deep work. If reading a passage helps you trust God, forgive someone, drop a lie you believed, or take one honest step of obedience, then real change has happened — that is the whole point. When a passage calls for slower, closer attention, the fuller EDGE method is there. GOAL isn't the lesser path; it's the everyday one.
God
What does this teach about God?
Start with God before you start with yourself. What does the passage show about who He is — His love, His holiness, His promises, His warnings, His mercy? How does it point to Jesus?
Others
What does this teach about others?
Scripture tells the truth about human beings. What does it show about our hopes, our fears, our sin, our weakness, our need? This is true of people in general — and true of you and me.
Align
Where do I need to align with this truth?
What belief needs to change? What lie have you been believing? What attitude, habit, or way of thinking needs to come into line with what God has said?
Live it out
How will I live out this truth?
Make it small and concrete. What will you do today or this week? Someone to forgive, thank, serve, or contact? A prayer to pray? Don't aim for everything — aim for one honest step.
GOAL on a verse you may already know.
Most people have heard John 3:16, even if they've never studied the Bible. Watch how four plain questions open it up — and preach the whole gospel along the way.
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."
God
Notice what the verse actually says about God: He loved the world. He gave His only Son. He offers eternal life to whoever believes.
The love comes first, and it moves. God does not wait to be persuaded — He acts, and what He gives costs Him everything.
God loved the world and gave His Son so people could have life.
Others
The verse says people would otherwise perish. That is a plain and sobering word. Whatever else is true of us, we are people in danger who need life we cannot give ourselves.
And notice who this is offered to: the world, and whoever believes. Not a select few.
People are in danger of perishing and need the life God gives.
Align
The verse says life comes to those who believe — not to those who perform well enough. If I have been treating God's love as something to earn, this passage says otherwise.
My part is to trust the Son God gave, receive that love, and live inside it.
Stop treating God's love as something I earn. Trust His Son.
Live it out
God so loved the world — not just me. If I have received a love that wide, I can extend it to someone specific this week.
And I can live as though eternal life has already begun, because the verse says it has.
Receive His love, and extend it to someone else.
Notice what we did — and did not — do
Everything above came from what John 3:16 actually says. We did not import ideas from elsewhere, however true they may be.
Other passages explain more fully how Jesus' death satisfies justice and bears our sin. Those truths are precious — but they belong to those passages. Here, we let this verse say its own thing.
That is the whole discipline: see what is there before you bring in what you already know.
